I have seen counselling work; my clients lead me where they need to go and I am often touched at how they reflect on themselves and their relationships with the people in their lives and the wider world. I see counselling as a two-way relationship and I have found that it is important for me to be a part of the process, rather than just being an active listener. In working with my clients’ needs in the moment, I am able to choose how to respond in the most effective way.
I am a fully qualified registered practitioner. My training at Leeds Beckett University is accredited by the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy). I am a registered member of the BACP and abide by their code of ethics. The model I am trained in is the Relational Approach, where the idea is that relationships and human connection are emotionally healing and can help us to see how we relate to other people, allowing the opportunity to change our relational patterns for our betterment. Working in this way encourages the therapy to revolve around the client and what they need in the moment, which often results in my spontaneously borrowing tools from other approaches when it might be useful, such as Solution Focused Therapy (based in solution building using current resources and hopes for the future), Transactional Analysis (relational transactions are explored with the ‘ego state’ in mind: parent-like, childlike, or adult-like, as a basis for understanding thoughts and behaviours) and other talking and child friendly therapies where appropriate.
In our first session we will have a chat about what has been going on for you and start to get to know one another. Any questions you have are totally welcome and I like to go at my client’s pace so as not to feel rushed or overwhelmed as I know that coming for therapy can be really difficult. This is a place where we can discuss any worries about the therapy itself and hopefully put you at ease. We will go over confidentiality, which means that what you say is private unless there is immediate risk of serious harm to self or another. Once we have had our initial session it is up to you whether or not you would like to have another as there is no obligation to do so if you don’t want to. I believe making own choices is a big part of therapeutic work and encourages empowerment and confidence and my initial goal is for my clients to feel comfortable.
